"Trying to capture the essence of an object or idea with only a few lines and at the same time maintaining its elegance – is pretty much design in a nutshell." Andy Fuller
Icon = a symbol or graphic representation of a person or thing. Icons are everywhere today and have to transcend language barriers. One of our main challenges on this project is to create something that is complex in concept, yet simple in form. Our mash up of icons will have the job of capturing the essence of a song, book, movie or tv show.
Some Design Considerations
pen and shape control (digital craftsmanship)
limited color palette for unity or emphasis
breathing room
text treatment should be secondary (simple?) and not distract from the imagery
use of juxtaposition
Juxtaposition = the placing of two or more contrasting compositional elements side-by-side, layered or in a position that reinforces the designs themehttps://blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/freebies/8-free-stipple-shading-brushes-for-adobe-illustrator
Workflow

Brainstorm two or more ideas (see handout for required brainstorming)
Build your icons with care and craftsmanship
Play & Plan in Illustrator (try several ideas from your brainstorming sheet, consider where your designs could deviate from your original plan)
Design & Feedback ask yourself & peers how the information is being visually read - Can you quickly interpret the information?
Explore Texture a guided demo will be given to create variation on Artboard 2 that incorporates texture
