What's your Jam?

Continuing our exploration of type as a design solution, we will be creating patterns made from letters. Those patterns will then be incorporated into jam packaging. We will also explore various ways to pair fonts together to create readable but dynamic descriptive wording on the packaging.

Some Design Considerations

  • font choice/personality
  • scale/size variety
  • rotation
  • cropping
  • pathfinder tools
  • transparency
  • color
  • negative space
  • layering
  • offset path
  • 3D tools
  • effects
  • anchor point manipulation
  • type on a path tool, vertical type tool
  • reflecting
  • stroke/no stroke/brush strokes
  • fill vs no fill
  • linking
  • font weight
  • focal point
  • gradient/compound path gradient
  • drop shadow (hard or soft)

Getting Started

  1. Play with various fonts and letters to create 2 or more interesting patterns
  2. Brainstorm various label shapes and verbiage for your jam label
  3. Use the provided jam photos in the classes folder as the base of your design.
  4. Design & Plan in Illustrator (review some of the design considerations above)
  5. Limitations
Artboard 1 can only use 2 fonts (1 of which is a font you used in your pattern, the 2nd must be contrasting in style, weight, width, etc)
Artboard 2 must use one of the following: varied orientation, varied baseline, linking, cropping, tilt, split
  6. Turn In your A2lastname.ai file into our period turn in folder on the classes drive
