The power of simplicity

A silhouette shows the shape of a subject without any detail. Silhouettes have the perfect combination of simplicity, power and creativity. They can be "visually read" quickly and when grouped together can sometimes have a greater impact together versus alone.

Brainstorm:

Use the brainstorm handout to explore several directions you could take this project before you decide on one. There major categories you could consider are 1. theme  2. compound word  3. social commentary

Workflow

  1. Find reference photos to trace - put them in your "links" folder. Place & Trace them in Illustrator on a blank document (minimum of three).

  2. Spend time refining shapes and using "knock out" if needed

  3. Choose a main shape. This shape will be the focal point of your poster and will help guide your composition.

  4. Thoughtfully arrange (or compose) several silhouettes to make up the larger image.
    Consider:
    • size variation
    • spacing
    • rotation
    • color

  5. Check out the tips & variations located in the "classes" GD1 templates folder to then create multiple versions of your design

  6. Turn in your Lastname A1 folder into the Graphic Design 1 A1 turn in folder located on the "classes" server
Inside your A1 folder should be:
    -links folder
    -pre-activity
-final file (4 artboards /4 design variations) a sample of the required variations can be found in the GD1 templates folder
